Q: My girlfriend and I decided to move in together and I would like to protect my assets apart from hers. Is there anything I should know about renters insurance for cohabiting couples and what happens if we break up but are in need of coverage?
You would have to buy two of the same policies for the same dwelling. I would recommend buying one policy in both of your names and if you split up down the road, one can keep the inforce policy assuming they still live in the same dwelling and the other can buy a new policy for their possessions at their new address.
